Different Post Card Types
There are several different types of postcards.
These include view cards, greeting cards, historical cards, art
cards, and photographic cards.
The “view” postcards are what normally come to mind when postcards
are mentioned. These postcards have been the foundation for postcard
sales. They are the types that are sold in souvenir shops so that
people on vacation or holiday can send them to their friends and
family back home, or collect them as tokens to remind them of the
places they visited. View cards also provide an historic reference
for places, such as buildings and streets that no longer exist.
Social history is a part of the view cards in that they enable us to
reminisce about the early forms of travel and the beginnings of the
modern age. Sometimes the messages that were written on postcards
will inform us of the details of the photo depicted or sentiments of
the day.
Greeting cards are a type of postcard that depicts symbols and
images of holidays, and special occasions such as Christmas, Easter,
Birthdays, Valentine's Day, etc. Some of these holiday and special
occasions postcards were among the most beautiful cards ever
printed. Publishers printed cards that used extraordinary embossing
methods, high quality art work, and costly lithographic methods and
additions such as glitter, ribbons, silk and feathers.
The purpose of historical cards is to commemorate events,
particularly wars, social events, parades, coronations, and
political campaigns. The older types of these historical cards can
be quite valuable, especially those which depict wars and disasters,
such as floods, fires, and earthquakes. The value and historical
worth is often a result of a message written by the sender.
Art Cards are probably the most important antique postcards, most of
which were special interest cards when printed. These cards were
normally purchased at a higher price than other postcards. Artists
who thrived during the period when art cards were popular are the
reason that these cards are popular today. These artists were so
skilled at portraying their talent on these beautiful postcards.
During the first decade of the 20th century, the postcard market for
artists was a huge business. In fact, it would be well over a
quarter million dollars in today's market. Postcard paintings
created a quality that was unmatched in the art world of that time.
Only the best postcards were printed at that time including some of
the "Old Master" art reproductions.
Photographic cards are genuine photo art studies of romance, as well
as beautiful women and children. These photographic postcards are a
work of art which are often hand tinted in colors which are
beautiful and unique. The photomontage methods have made it possible
for photos to be transformed into original works of art.
